Director of Engineering, Developer Experience
As a Director of Engineering, Brent brings over 15 years of expertise in leading and managing platform, infrastructure, software engineering, cross-functional, and site reliability engineering (SRE) teams. His passion lies in driving innovation to deliver results and solve complex business problems. Throughout his career, he has led cloud migrations from on-premise datacenters to AWS, GCP, and IBM Softlayer, leveraged infrastructure automation to reduce time-to-production, and developed custom SaaS and PaaS environments at Genesys Telecommunications, IBM, and Wayfair. Brent's dedication to continuous improvement drives me to run small-scale experiments and evaluate the results to find business value. Over the past 10 years, these experiments have resulted in an improvement in IBM Resilient SaaS uptime from 99.3% to 99.997%, a 92% decrease in IBM Resilient deployment times, a 320% decrease in VM deployments for Wayfair, an $877,217 savings in Wayfair's annual GCP compute spend, and a 450% increase in Nursa's weekly deployments.

Fostering a culture of coaching within a development organization
In this session, we'll explore the profound impact of embedding a coaching culture in a development organization. Coaching goes beyond traditional professional development to do more than just address skill gaps, including fostering innovation, problem-solving, and a deeply engaged workforce. Such a culture significantly contributes to employee retention by creating a supportive and growth-oriented environment, leading to higher job satisfaction and engagement levels. This, in turn, translates to substantial business value, equipping organizations with a competitive edge in the fast-paced, competitive landscape of the tech industry. Encouraging a culture of coaching involves not only formal initiatives but also establishing an organizational ethos that values continuous learning, open communication, and mutual support. We will delve into effective strategies to foster this culture, emphasizing the importance of structured mentorship programs, creating opportunities for peer learning, and the critical role of leadership in championing and modeling coaching behaviors. By implementing these strategies, organizations can unlock the full potential of their teams, driving innovation and sustaining long-term success.
